A self-storage unit is great for storing your personal items. However, the storage facility may have restrictions on how you can store certain things. Many of these items are not allowed or are restricted in self-storage units either by law or because they cause problems or create a hazard. While your storage rental contract will spell out some of these items, you should still be prepared before you move in.
Discover some of the top things you should leave out of or store cautiously in your self-storage unit and why.
Things You Should Not Put in Storage
In addition to possible legal restrictions, many of these items can be dangerous both to you and other tenants. Therefore, they should be handled a different way by a specialized facility.
Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials can often break down and corrode. Some materials can leak through their container and damage the unit or even leak into the ground. Examples of hazardous items include paint and paint thinners, pesticides, and fertilizer.
Firearms and Explosives
Firearms and ammunition need extra-secure storage to guard against theft and accidents. You may be able to store them in a unit under certain conditions. Explosives, like fireworks, can corrode and potentially go off on their own, making them a hazard.
Plants
Plants will die without adequate lighting and ventilation. In addition, moist soil can contribute to mold and other issues.
Foods
Even if you only rent the unit for a short time, don't store food inside, including pet food. Food can rot and attract pests. Some food can also grow mold, which could spread and cause damage to your things and other units.
Wet Items
Wet items can increase the moisture inside your unit and contribute to mold growth as well. The increased moisture could damage your other items. Make sure everything you put in your unit is dry.
Things You Can Put in Storage With Precautions
None of these items are restricted from self-storage, but you might want to take protective measures. These items are not necessarily a hazard, but they need special care before and during storage. Discover some examples.
Artwork
Some artworks require special temperature-controlled or darkened units. These conditions keep them in optimum condition. Also, consider special boxes or storage crates for added protection.
Files
Files, like office records, are generally okay to bring to your storage unit. If your files are from a business, be sure to consult your business's policy and any potential laws in regards to self-storage facilities. You may want to put them in a protective container for long-term storage. Store the files you may need more often in the front of the unit.
Vehicles
Vehicles, or anything with an engine, are often allowed with restrictions. You may need to drain them of any oils or gasoline. Make sure you keep your vehicle registered and insured.
Antique Furniture
You can store antique furniture in a self-storage unit, especially if it's temperature-controlled. However, like artwork, you will need to give your furniture special protections like crates or covers.
Musical Instruments
For best results, make sure your musical instrument is clean and in its original storage case. This suggestion goes for pianos as well. If you have a grand piano, consider removing the legs for easier storage.
