Along the way, you will accumulate a variety of things. As a result, you often have an ever-growing need for space. Storage units offer great solutions for people who need more space, especially for things they rarely use.

To get you started, below is a list of popular stored items and a few tips on storing them.

Commercial Goods

Small businesses and online retailers often face limited resources. Many small businesses and retailers cannot afford a large rental space or multiple employees. Such business owners and retailers often use self-storage units.

A storage unit can be a place to store business inventory and work on projects. In turn, the business runs smoothly and efficiently, resulting in greater productivity.

Businesses renovating or relocating can also use storage units to store items temporarily. Self-storage units are also a cost-effective and secure way to archive confidential documents, such as tax records.

Furniture

Furniture is undoubtedly one of the most popular items people store in storage units.

Furniture pieces are often large and take up a large amount of space — whether it be antique, new, or old or for your living room, bedroom, or outdoor area. However, many people cannot afford to throw or give away excess furniture.

People who simply need to store excess furniture or old pieces that are too good to let go of may find self-storage units a viable alternative.

To make storage more convenient, consider disassembling large furniture before moving it into storage. Doing so will make the piece easier to store and transport, and you will have more space for other items.

Collectibles

Collectors can spend a lifetime acquiring the pieces in their collections. The items can be anything from stamps to exotic art. Often, the items are valuable and need to remain in good condition. As a result, collectors may require a clean, safe place to store the items.

A storage facility might provide you with a higher level of security than what you can get at home for your collectibles. Self-storage units are a good storage option for collectibles because they often offer climate-controlled environments.

When storing such valuable items, avoid letting the pieces touch the ground and cover them up. Additionally, insure and appraise your collection before storing it.

Home Appliances

In many cases, people have working appliances that they don't use. Or maybe you have a newer version of an item, but you want to keep the old one in case you need it in the future. Most people, however, don't have enough square footage to store the items.

A self-storage unit can be a safe, dry place to keep your appliances when they are not in use. Items such as refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves can all go into storage.

When you store appliances, make sure to follow good storage practices. Wash and dry your appliances before storing them in self-storage to preserve their condition. Also, ensure your appliances are always upright, preferably against a wall.

Seasonal Items

Occasions like Christmas and Halloween only come once a year. But many families end up with boxes of costumes, lights, and decorations.

Once the season is over, self-storage can be the perfect place to keep the seasonal items until the following year. The boxes will remain out of your way and won't take up space in your basement, garage, or attic.

You can make retrieving the items easier by keeping them in color-coded bins. For Halloween items, for example, you can use black and orange colors, and for winter holiday decorations, you can use reds and greens.

Despite the above items' popularity, they are just the tip of the iceberg. The possibilities for storing things in storage units are endless.
