5 Tips for Storing Your Furniture in Self-Storage Units

August 22, 2023

When you need to store your property, turning to self-storage units could be the best decision for you. When it comes to furniture, proper storage techniques can make all the difference in maintaining its condition and longevity. From antique pieces with sentimental value to contemporary furnishings, ensuring that your furniture emerges from storage in pristine condition requires careful planning and consideration.

The process of storing your furniture safely and efficiently can be daunting if you're not well informed. So, keep reading to learn five essential tips to help you preserve the integrity of your pieces while they await their return to your living spaces.

1. Select a Secure Storage Facility

Take some time to check the facility's safety measures. You should rent a storage unit that has a good lock, an alarm that can be proven to be working, and video surveillance of the premises. If you want to provide extra protection for your things, verify that the entrance remains locked after you close it.

Finally, you should double-check that the storage facility and your belongings are well protected. You may provide your furniture the best possible protection by learning as much as you can about the business' safety standards.

2. Clean the Furniture and Storage Unit

Storing furniture for an extended period requires careful consideration of both the condition of the furniture and the storage space. Verify that nothing may damage the furniture or make it more prone to harm while in storage by thoroughly cleaning each piece and storage space before putting it away.

Dust the piece with a soft cloth, then clean and scrub it with a rag dampened with mild dish soap and water. Then, wipe down the furniture with a cotton swab dampened in the same solution and dry the piece completely. Finally, use a soft cloth and circular motions to rub on a layer of furniture polish.

To clean upholstered and fabric furniture, remove the cushions and sweep or vacuum the entire piece. In addition, if the furniture has a fabric covering, use a steam cleaner. Use a solution of vinegar and water for leather furniture, then condition the leather. Dry the furniture thoroughly before putting it away.

To clean the unit, sweep it using a vacuum cleaner or brush, and then wipe it off with a moist towel. This not only helps eliminate any lingering mold, dirt, or pests, but it also keeps any new scents from becoming overpowering once you shut the unit.

3. Disassemble Your Furniture

The first step in dismantling furniture is to collect and organize all of the screws, nuts, and other hardware that came with it. Next, carefully take out any drawers or bed rails. Finally, if you can, try to disassemble the furniture into smaller parts to move and store it more easily. The best method to ensure that your furniture is still in good shape when you eventually remove it from storage is to familiarize yourself with the assembly/disassembly procedure before moving it in.

4. Prepare the Unit's Floor

If you want to keep your furniture in good condition during storage, avoid placing it on the floor. Moisture trapped in the ground can lead to mold development and warped furniture. Use a layer of pallets to protect the furniture from the storage unit's floor. This will keep your furniture off the ground and avoid any potential moisture damage.

The next step is to cover the pallets with a tarp to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood. Also, cover the storage unit's floor with a heavy plastic sheet. This will act as a barrier against moisture damage.

5. Choose the Appropriate Cover

Bubble wrap works well for wooden furniture, while sheets, old blankets, or specialized furniture covers are recommended for protecting upholstered and leather pieces. Wrap the furniture with a drop cloth, blanket, or natural fabric sheet for added protection, leaving some space between the wrapping and the piece to allow air to circulate. Be careful not to seal humidity into the textiles and wood by wrapping your furniture in plastic too tightly.
