4 Tips for Storing Football Memorabilia in Storage Units

May 24, 2023

Football fans often celebrate their favorite teams with a collection of memorabilia and items. The memorabilia may highlight specific players or some of the team's greatest moments like a win in the Super Bowl. As you collect sports memorabilia, you may want to build on your collection but don't quite have all the room to display items yet.

Make your storage options a lot easier with storage units. A storage unit supplies you with the extra space to hold items. When you rent a storage unit, you likely want to ensure that you don't just drop off items. With a little planning, you can ensure your football collectibles remain protected and in pristine condition.

Check out these tips to learn some of the best ways to store your memorabilia in storage units.

1. Use Picture Frame Boxes

Teams will often release framed pictures or plaques showcasing player highlights and achievements. The designs make great wall pieces and can really stand out. In some cases, you may have framed prints that are actually signed by players on the team.

Add an extra layer of protection with picture frame boxes. The boxes include enough space to hold and protect a frame from dirt and dust buildup. The boxes also come with cushioned corner protectors for the frame. You will simply slip on the protector over each corner and prevent any cracks in the glass or chips on the frame itself.

Some boxes can hold multiple frames with cushioned separation between each one. Others are for single frames. See how many boxes you need and purchase enough to cover all of your frames.

2. Hang Jerseys in Wardrobe Boxes

Football fans will often collect jerseys to wear on game days or when they attend games. You may also have a jersey collection that you plan to hang in your home. Either way, you likely want to protect the jersey and keep the item in mint condition. If you fold a jersey, you could create creases and wrinkles that you may have trouble scrubbing out.

Use wardrobe boxes to keep jerseys in mint condition. A wardrobe box offers an ideal place to hang the jerseys, and the box that surrounds the wardrobe box will offer additional protection. When you hang jerseys, consider padded and flexible hangers that can conform to the shape of a jersey. You don't want the jersey to change shape due to the hanger.

3. Deflate Footballs

Football fans may have a collection of footballs to put on display. The footballs could include game-used balls, autographed balls, or special collector's balls that were released to celebrate a team's achievement. When you put footballs in storage, you want to protect them from rapid temperature changes that can occur.

Extreme heat and extreme cold can change the shape of a football. Deflate the balls while in storage so the ball does not become warped or shaped differently due to the temperature changes. Once deflated, keep the balls in a zippered plastic bag for additional protection from dust and air exposure.

4. Purchase Acrylic Helmet Display Cases

If you own any replica football helmets, then protect the helmets from dust and dings. Consider an acrylic helmet display case for your item. A display case will not only protect a helmet while in storage but can provide you with a simple way to display the helmet once you pull it out of storage.

You can keep the helmet in the display case and use the case to put the helmet up in your home.
